For the local exam, 135 students from 39 different county high schools participated. The number was a bit lower than in the past due to an unforeseen conflict with the SAT test. The average score was 35.8 or 59.7%.

Eleven students from eight Orange County High Schools qualified for the National Chemistry Olympiad competition. Nationally, 1025 students reached this level. On Part I of the National Exam (the only portion of the test where the results are released) the national average was 30.8 or 51.3%. The eleven students from the Orange County Local section that competed had an average score of 42.5 or 70.8%. Once again, the students from our area excelled above those found in other Local Sections.

2016 Results
This year 39 schools with a total of 141 students competed in the Orange County Section Chemistry Olympiad exam. 13 students (we had one automatic qualifier) from 9 High Schools from Orange County qualified for the National Chemistry Olympiad competition, of which 4 finished with High Honors (top 50 in the nation). Only one other Section in the US had more, and only 4 Sections also had 4 High Honor students like us. This is commendable for a smaller section like ours, especially when one considers the fact that there were 144 participating Local Sections.
