Our NCW program took place on a beautiful fall day, Sunday, October 13, 2013, at the Santa Ana Zoo in Santa Ana, CA. We offered a smorgasbord of hands-on chemistry experiments for kids in one of the zoo's open areas. Twelve college groups participated this year, with each group offering a different set of experiments. These ranged from making a zinc penny battery (to emphasize the theme of "Energy - Now and Forever") to liquid nitrogen ice cream (with samples), because science is fun! It must be said that the college students helping the children with experiments had as much fun as the little kids - a great role modeling experience for both groups! We also offered a science show, Rudy's Radical Science, which had an attendance of 250-300 people (definitely standing room only!).
Our annual event was large! 2341 people attended (plus a contingent of more than 200 volunteers from the colleges), of whom 1187 were children. We were able to continue our program of free zoo admission to families of Santa Ana and Tustin in 2011. 1458 people requested free admission, and 945 of those were children (161 more than last year), so we certainly did well in recruiting our target audience in the local community, which is primarily Hispanic and without the financial resources to go to the zoo if the admission isn't free.
