Chemists Celebrate Earth Week
Illustrated Poem Contest
Every year 6th-12th grade students in Orange County are invited to submit an illustrated poem to OCACS on the current NCW theme. Cash prizes are awarded to the best three submissions.
Entries are judged based upon:
- Artistic Merit - use of color, quality of drawing, design and layout
- Poem Message - a fun, motivational, inspiring topic focused on the yearly theme
- Originality & Creativity - expression of unique, clever and creative ideas
- Neatness - the poem must be free of spelling and grammatical errors
Winners of the Orange County Contest advance to the ACS National Illustrated Poem Contest for a chance to win cash prizes and be featured on the ACS national website!
The theme of the 2020 Orange County Contest was “Sticking with Chemistry!”

The winners were:
- 1st place ($75): Alyssa Tang, 10th Grade, University High School, Irvine; teacher Valerie Thompson
- 2nd place ($50): Gabrielle Avena, 10th Grade, Kennedy High School, La Palma; teacher Dean Wang
- 3rd place ($25): Sophia Le, 9th Grade, Westminster High School, Westminster; teacher Huy Pham

Alyssa Tang’s poem won first place in the 9-12 grade category of the 2020 National Chemistry Week Illustrated Poem Contest. Her teacher Valerie Thompson was also recognized by the National Office.
