In 2020 the Fall National Meeting was virtual and so was the 22nd Annual ChemLuminary Awards ceremony. The winner announcements and presentations of all ChemLuminary Awards given by 23 committees of the Society were done live and broadcast for remote viewing on Wednesday, December 9, at 1 pm PT. The year’s theme, “2020 Focus on Our Volunteers: Moving Chemistry Forward,” honored the work of our volunteers to continue to improve people’s lives. The ceremony included a keynote address by Janet L. Bryant, recipient of the 2020 Award for Volunteer Service to the American Chemical Society.The Orange County Section was selected as a finalist for the following ChemLuminary Awards:
- Global Engagement Award
- Outstanding or Creative Local Section Younger Chemists Committee Event
The Orange County Section won the Global Engagement ChemLuminary Award for organizing an Outreach event in the Philippines.The activities selected for these awards were organized by members of our Younger Chemist Committee. Congratulations to all the Young Chemists who volunteered their time to make these events a resounding success!
- Monica Gutfinger (YCC) and Dr. Keisuke Ikehata (Environmental Group) organized a 2-day Pervious Concrete Workshop to teach students about permeable concrete pavement technology and its benefits on storm water control.
- Erin Araneta hosted an Outreach Event at the Hospicio de San Jose orphanage in Manila in the Philippines where the children performed experiments under the guidance of a scientist from a local science museum. The event was sponsored by OCACS.
