Chemistry Olympiad 2022

The 2022 ACS Orange County Chemistry Olympiad was held online on Saturday, March 5, 2022, from 8:30AM-11:00AM, at the Business Sciences and Technology Innovation Center (BSTIC), Irvine Valley College, Irvine CA. There were 101 students from 26 different Orange County high schools participating in the competition. The top score was 60/60, and the winning team was from University High School.

The US National Chemistry Olympiad took place on April 23, 2022. Winners went to the National Study Camp in June. Eleven students then took the US National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) on April 23, 2022, which comprised 3.25 hours of multiple choice and free response questions along with 1.5 hours of lab work. Two scored among the top 20 in the nation, and they attended the National Study Camp at the University of Maryland in June. 

One of them, Nathan Ouyang, a sophomore at University High School, Irvine, CA, qualified to became a member of the US team of four students selected to represent the U.S. at the 54th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) on July 8-18, 2022, hosted virtually by Nankai University, Tianjin, China. Nathan finished 6th in the world and was awarded a gold medal!

Traditionally, OCACS organizes an Awards Dinner in May following the Chem Olympiad, at which the top student from each School is honored with an award, and their name is engraved on their School’s perpetual plaque. Certificates are also given to all the students in the top 6 teams.  The awards at this Dinner are presented to winners in several events: the Chemistry Olympiad, the High School 1st-year Chemistry Exam and the Orange County Science Fair (Chemistry Category).
